If you search "best session replay tools," you'll find listicles that treat FullStory, Hotjar, and Datadog RUM as roughly equivalent options. They're not. They make fundamentally different trade-offs around recording model, technical capture depth, performance overhead, and primary audience — and choosing the wrong one for your workflow is a meaningful mistake.

Start with the investigation you need to complete, then test each shortlisted tool on the same SaaS workflow. 1. Recording coverage

Do you need the original session from before a report, or can the customer reproduce the issue? Test navigation, authentication, and recording start/stop. Continuous tools can use sampling and capture rules; they do not necessarily record every visit.

2. Debugging evidence

Trigger a failed request and a console error. Can an engineer find the request URL, status, timing, and matching replay moment? Verify payload visibility and redaction rather than assuming every network panel captures the same detail.

Datadog vs Fullstory: which investigation matters most?

Both products can help engineers investigate a replay. Fullstory’s Dev Tools expose console messages, errors, and network information. Datadog’s replay developer tools also support investigation of errors and performance. Do not choose between them on the assumption that only one captures technical evidence.

Trial Datadog for backend correlation

If a slow API call is the central problem, test the path from replay to RUM resource to backend trace. Datadog documents RUM/APM correlation; verify instrumentation and trace availability in your own stack.

Consider Fullstory when behavior analysis and session investigation need to work together. Its Network view is scoped to a page within a session; test a multi-page SaaS workflow rather than assuming a single view covers every navigation.

LogRocket

Include LogRocket in an engineering replay shortlist, then validate its console, network, and issue-triage workflow with the same incident used for the other tools. Check current plans rather than relying on older SDK-size estimates or enterprise contract anecdotes.

Hotjar / Contentsquare

Datadog session replay: what to test before buying

Datadog Browser Session Replay combines replay with RUM performance data. In a trial, reproduce a frontend error, inspect its context, and check whether your configured APM instrumentation provides the backend trace you need.

  1. Confirm recording coverage. Datadog’s setup guide distinguishes RUM sampling from replay sampling. Its example of 80% RUM and 20% replay captures replays for 16% of total sessions, not 20%. Test the resulting coverage against rare incidents.
  2. Inspect diagnostic detail. Check the error, request timing, and replay moment together. Do not assume a visible request implies full body capture or a backend trace.
  3. Measure collection cost. Test CPU work and transferred bytes with your capture settings. Datadog documents compression to reduce replay network impact; actual performance still depends on your pages and workload.

Run a repeatable SaaS session replay trial
